Service Philosophy

Our Philosophy

At EHOOSH, we believe childhood is a time to be cherished, explored, and enjoyed. We provide a caring, flexible, and inclusive space where children have the freedom to engage in play and leisure, and connect with others in their own chosen way. We strive to be responsive to the evolving needs of our community, ensuring that our systems and practices are adaptable, reflective, and always open to improvement. We are eager to partner with families, recognising that parents are children’s first and most influential teachers. Our approach is guided by contemporary PARS Playwork Theory, the National Quality Framework, and ‘My Time, Our Place’, ensuring that our work remains evidence-based and child-centred.

Time and Space to be Children

We honour childhood as a unique and valuable stage of life. Here, children can be alive in the moment, free to explore, imagine, create, and dream. We see the world through their eyes, prioritizing their needs, interests, and perspectives. We maximize opportunities for play to bubble up from the child, rather than being dictated by adult expectations. Play is where children learn, laugh, build friendships, and develop resilience. It includes risky play, deep play, messy play, and self-directed exploration. Whether climbing trees, wrestling, digging in the dirt, or experimenting with loose parts, children are encouraged to explore challenges, assess and take safe risks, and develop confidence in their own capabilities.

Empathy

Empathy is central to everything we do. It’s about seeing the world through others’ eyes, listening deeply, and fostering kindness and respect. We recognize that every behaviour, whether positive or challenging, reflects a child’s attempt to meet essential psychological needs. We challenge the idea that adults’ perspectives are more valid than children’s and believe that children’s emotions should be understood, not simply managed. We believe empathy:
• Builds strong, trusting relationships with children, families, and colleagues
• Encourages open conversations about diverse perspectives and cultures
• Amplifies children’s voices, allowing them to shape their experiences
• Creates an emotionally safe, inclusive space for all
By modelling empathy in our practice, we empower children to become kind, caring, thoughtful, and socially aware individuals.

Care

We view care as more than a feeling—it is an action. It is about actively meeting the needs of others, fostering a sense of belonging and safety, and ensuring that every child, educator, and family feels valued. We provide individualized, holistic support to children and families, recognizing that everyone’s journey is different. We also prioritize the emotional health and well-being of our children, educators, and broader community. We challenge the assumption that caring for children means making decisions for them. By removing unnecessary structures like forced group times and pack-up expectations, we ensure that “care” doesn’t translate to control, but instead supports children’s freedom to simply be themselves. Care means:

  • Creating an environment where children feel safe, supported, and empowered
  • Recognizing that every child has unique circumstances, perspectives, and needs
  • Ensuring fairness, inclusivity, and accessibility for all
  • Supporting not just children, but families and the wider community

What Makes Us Different?

  • Children’s autonomy is a priority – Our unique routines maximize children’s time for play, eliminating unnecessary group times and removing pack-up expectations.
  • We embrace all types of play – Risky, deep, and messy play are encouraged because they build confidence, resilience, and life skills.
  • We are deeply connected to our community – We welcome high school volunteers, sponsor children through World Vision, and actively engage in local events such as the annual fireworks night.
  • We strive to be a place of adventure and excitement – Our OOSH is filled with books, activities, games, arts and crafts, and uplifting conversations—but most of all, it’s a place where kids can simply be kids.
